The Government of Nepal is preparing to table a bill in Parliament to amend the Safe Motherhood and Reproductive Health Rights Act, 2075, proposing six months of paid maternity leave for mothers and 42 days of paid paternity care leave for fathers.
Announcing the development via social media, Law Minister Sobita Gautam stated that the amendment bill has been drafted and is being routed through the Cabinet to Parliament. She noted that due to modern work pressures and changing lifestyles, most families are now limited to one or two children.

Minister Gautam emphasized that providing parents sufficient time for their newborn and family during these rare moments in life is a responsibility of the state. She added that while childbirth is a natural process associated with mothers, raising a child is a shared responsibility of both parents.
The proposed amendment is considered a major policy shift regarding safe motherhood and parenthood. The draft legislation now awaits formal submission and deliberation in Parliament.
