Election Commission: Gagan-led Congress Committee Cannot Be Recognized in Current State

KATHMANDU — The Election Commission (EC) of Nepal has clarified that it cannot render a decision regarding the legitimacy of the newly formed central working committee of the Nepali Congress, led by Gagan Thapa, until formal written documentation is received.

Suman Ghimire, the Commission’s Information Officer, stated during a press interaction at 10:00 AM on Magh 1, 2082, that the Commission has not yet received any official letter requesting registration or recognition of the new committee.

"To determine whether recognition can be granted, a written letter must be submitted to the Commission; that has not arrived yet," Officer Ghimire said. "Until that arrives, we cannot say—without formal discussion—whether we will recognize it or not."

The Special General Convention, recently held at Bhrikutimandap, announced the new committee via "consensus," bypassing the standard voting process. This has raised public questions regarding the committee's legitimacy due to procedural lapses. The Commission is currently awaiting the formal written submission. Meanwhile, the faction led by Thapa is reportedly preparing to dispatch the official letter to the Commission.

The legal status and validity of the new committee will only be determined after the relevant party submits the written letter and the Commission deliberates on the matter.
