Birgunj Erupts: Anti-Pakistan Rally Defies Police After Student's Death!

In protest against the recent barbaric terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu-Kashmir, the National Unity Campaign organized a large protest rally on Monday from Simra in Bara district to Birgunj in Parsa district. Braving heavy obstruction by security personnel, the demonstrators successfully reached Ghantaghar (Clock Tower) in Birgunj, where they strongly condemned the incident carried out by a Pakistan-supported terrorist group. The attack resulted in the deaths of 26 innocent people, including Nepali student Sudip Neupane, which has also sparked outrage in Nepal.
Demonstration at Ghantaghar Amid Police Obstruction:
Security forces attempted to stop the peaceful rally, which started from Simra, near Jitpur. Although police detained some demonstrators, the angered participants were undeterred. They used alternative routes and managed to reach the historic Ghantaghar, considered the heart of Birgunj. The Ghantaghar area resonated with anti-Pakistan slogans.
'Pakistan is the Birthplace of Terrorism':
Participants in the demonstration chanted slogans such as 'Pakistan is the birthplace of terrorism,' 'Down with Islamic terrorism,' 'Martyrs of Pahalgam are immortal,' and 'Stop killing innocent civilians.' Addressing the event, National Unity Campaign Chairman Vinay Yadav accused Pakistan of planning the Pahalgam attack as part of a strategy to destabilize South Asia. "Nepal must also clearly oppose terrorism," he emphasized. Yadav described the attempt to stop the rally as a violation of citizens' freedom of expression, although the local administration stated that the rally was organized without permission and intervention was necessary due to security sensitivities.
Tributes Paid to Deceased, Including Nepali Citizen:
At the protest meeting held at Ghantaghar, participants offered heartfelt tributes to the Indian security personnel, civilians, and especially the Nepali citizen, Sudipani Neupane, who were killed in the Pahalgam attack. A minute of silence was also observed in their memory.
It is generally rare for such public protests against Pakistan to occur openly on the streets in Nepal. This demonstration by the National Unity Campaign appears to be an effort to further awaken Nepali public opinion against active terrorism in South Asia and the forces supporting it.
